The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has released a comprehensive list of 203 tertiary institutions across the country that failed to upload their students’ data for the ongoing 2024/2025 student loan application.
This revelation has generated intense concern nationwide, as students enrolled in the affected schools now face the risk of being excluded from the government’s interest-free student loan scheme — a key policy aimed at easing financial pressure on Nigerian students and families.
NELFUND Issues Final 48-Hour Grace Period
In an official statement, NELFUND explained that the non-compliance of the listed institutions has delayed the full rollout of the national student loan scheme. To give them a last opportunity, the agency announced a final 48-hour extension of the data submission window.
The grace period runs from 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025, to 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, after which the submission portal will be permanently closed.
NELFUND described the extension as an act of goodwill but emphasized that no further extensions will be granted. Any school that fails to comply within this period will be automatically excluded from the 2024/2025 student loan cycle.
Why the Data Submission Is Crucial
According to NELFUND, all tertiary institutions — federal, state, and private — are required to upload verified data of their students onto the Student Loan Application System (SLAS).
This process helps the agency to:
- Verify student identities and enrollment status.
- Facilitate accurate loan disbursement to eligible applicants.
- Prevent fraud, impersonation, and double registration.
By failing to comply, these 203 institutions have effectively blocked their students from participating in the government’s zero-interest loan scheme.
NELFUND Warns Non-Compliant Institutions
The management of NELFUND has warned that any institution that fails to meet the submission deadline will be disqualified from the current loan phase, meaning their students will not benefit from the student loan initiative this academic year.
The agency further noted that this level of non-compliance undermines the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education through transparent and equitable financial support systems.
Stakeholders React to NELFUND’s Announcement
Reactions have continued to pour in following NELFUND’s publication of the default list. Student unions, academic staff, and education stakeholders have expressed disappointment at the negligence of some institutions.
Many student groups have urged school authorities to act swiftly before the grace period ends, while others called for stronger coordination between NELFUND and schools to prevent such lapses in the future.
Some institutions, however, have attributed their delays to technical challenges and verification bottlenecks, requesting more time to finalize the upload process.

The Road Ahead
As the October 14 deadline approaches, attention now turns to the listed schools. If they fail to comply within the 48-hour window, their students could lose access to the government’s loan benefits — a setback that could affect thousands of young Nigerians.
NELFUND reaffirmed that once the deadline passes, loan disbursement will proceed strictly to students from compliant institutions.
Conclusion
The release of this list serves as a critical wake-up call to tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The student loan scheme was designed to promote fairness and accessibility, but its success depends on institutional responsibility and administrative efficiency.
For now, the fate of thousands of students lies in how swiftly their schools respond to NELFUND’s final directive.
