In a dramatic turn of events that has captured the attention of Nigerians nationwide, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, following a viral video showing him driving recklessly and crashing his vehicle during a live-streamed broadcast.
According to a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi, the arrest stems from footage that emerged online on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in which Peller was seen engaging in dangerous driving that endangered his life and the safety of other road users.
Reckless Driving Captured Live
The video, which quickly went viral on social media platforms, showed the 20-year-old influencer driving at high speed and engaging in risky manoeuvres while broadcasting live to his audience. Police described the conduct as “extremely dangerous”, noting that it could have resulted in fatal consequences for both Peller and other motorists or pedestrians.
In their statement, the police also suggested that the actions captured in the video could constitute a deliberate attempt to commit suicide, given the level of risk involved, further amplifying public concern over the incident.
Investigation Underway
Following his arrest, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive probe. Authorities have indicated that the outcome of the investigation will be made public and that Peller will be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law upon conclusion of the inquiries.
Police Warning and Public Safety Message
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh has issued a stern warning to social media influencers, content creators, and the general public against engaging in or promoting reckless or unlawful behaviour online. Officials stressed that no one is above the law and that dangerous conduct will not be tolerated, regardless of a person’s popularity or social status.
The police urged road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to ensure public safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
FRSC Plans Prosecution
Separately, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced intentions to prosecute Peller over the alleged reckless and distracted driving. The Corps highlighted that livestreaming or engaging in activities that distract drivers violates established road safety regulations and poses significant risks to public welfare.
Public Reaction and Broader Debate
The incident has sparked widespread public discourse, with many calling for stronger enforcement of traffic laws and greater accountability for influencers who set risky behavioural examples online. Critics argue that dangerous stunts for online engagement can influence impressionable followers, potentially encouraging similar reckless behaviour.
As the investigation continues and legal proceedings develop, the case of Peller’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible conduct on and off social media — especially where public safety is at stake.
