A former student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has captured the attention of Nigerians online after sharing the remarkable journey of his academic life — from a challenging start to achieving a respectable degree classification.
The student, identified by his social media handle @Blades_ms, revealed that he began his undergraduate studies with an ambitious goal: to graduate among the top of his class with a stellar 4.9+ CGPA. In his own words:
“Swept a 4.9+ CGPA. Swept best graduating student. That was the plan.”
However, reality quickly humbled him. At the end of his 100-level year, he recorded a 1.79 CGPA, a score that fell far below his expectations. Reflecting on that period, he said:
“First year humbled me real quick with a 1.79 CGPA. I recalibrated, worked harder, and refused to give up.”
“Six years later (ASUU & COVID added 2), Second Class Upper secured.”
“Let’s make CGPA a private property.”
The student also highlighted the challenges posed by nationwide academic disruptions, including the ASUU strikes and the COVID-19 pandemic, which collectively extended his degree programme by approximately two years. Despite these setbacks, he persevered and ultimately graduated with a Second Class Upper Degree, a testament to determination and resilience.
His viral social media post included a screenshot of his final results, attracting an outpouring of congratulatory messages from netizens. Many users praised his honesty, determination, and ability to overcome early academic challenges. Some of the reactions included:

The story has sparked conversations about perseverance, resilience, and the pressures students face in higher education. Many see his journey as a powerful reminder that early academic setbacks do not determine final outcomes, and that determination and hard work can dramatically change one’s trajectory.
As the student’s story continues to circulate online, it serves as both a cautionary tale and an inspiration to countless students navigating similar challenges in their academic careers.
