Nigeria’s film industry has recorded a historic milestone as the psychological thriller The Weekend becomes the first independently produced Nigerian thriller to premiere on HBO Max, one of the world’s leading streaming platforms. The development signals a growing international appetite for Nollywood content and showcases the creative potential of Nigerian filmmakers on the global stage.
Produced by Trino Motion Pictures and directed by Daniel Oriahi, The Weekend tells the gripping story of Nikiya, a young orphan who visits the family of her fiancé, Luke, only to uncover dark secrets that transform a seemingly ordinary weekend into a tense psychological nightmare. The film’s carefully crafted suspense, combined with social commentary, has won critical acclaim for its originality and storytelling.
The movie features a stellar cast including Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Bucci Franklin, Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey, Gloria Anozie-Young, Damilola Ogunsi, and James Gardiner. Their performances bring depth and authenticity to the film, enhancing its psychological tension and making it a standout in Nollywood’s thriller genre.
Before its streaming release, The Weekend made waves internationally, premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, where it became the first independently produced Nigerian film to be selected. It also featured at major global festivals, including the BFI London Film Festival and Screamfest, one of the United States’ largest horror film festivals.
The film has also achieved remarkable recognition at award ceremonies. At the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), it received a record 16 nominations, winning several key awards including Best Film, Best Nigerian Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Internationally, it won the Best Film “Monster Award” at the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival, further solidifying its reputation as one of Nollywood’s most successful genre films.
