The Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, was filled with celebration, pride, and academic prestige as the institution recorded a major milestone at its 17th convocation ceremony, where 40 students graduated with First Class honours.
The event, which drew together university officials, government representatives, parents, and graduands, highlighted TASFUED’s steady rise as a centre of academic excellence and postgraduate research in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
Outstanding Undergraduate Results Across Faculties
A total of 4,785 regular undergraduate students were awarded degrees during the ceremony. The academic breakdown released by the university revealed a strong overall performance, reflecting both student commitment and institutional standards.
Out of the graduating class, 40 students emerged with First Class honours, while 1,466 students graduated with Second Class Upper Division. 2,768 students earned Second Class Lower Division degrees, 492 students finished with Third Class honours, and 92 students obtained Pass degrees.
Beyond the regular undergraduate stream, the convocation also covered 269 part-time students as well as 88 graduates from the Nigerian Army College of Education, underscoring the university’s broad academic reach and inclusive learning structure.
Strong Showing at Postgraduate Level
TASFUED’s growing postgraduate capacity was equally evident, with 356 postgraduate students successfully graduating across multiple disciplines.
The postgraduate cohort included 73 Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) holders, 21 Postgraduate Diploma graduates, 85 Master of Education recipients, 50 Master of Science graduates, 19 Master of Arts graduates, five Master of Arts in Education graduates, and 13 Master of Library and Information Science graduates. Most notably, 90 candidates were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees, a figure that signals the institution’s expanding role in advanced research and academic scholarship.
Vice-Chancellor Highlights Institutional Growth
Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adekunle Adeogun, described the academic achievements of the graduands as a clear reflection of the university’s strengthening teaching, research, and learning environment.
He noted that TASFUED has continued to invest in academic development, curriculum expansion, and staff capacity building, all of which have contributed to improved student outcomes. According to him, the institution remains committed to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with practical skills relevant to national development.
Introduction of New Academic Programmes
In a major announcement, the university leadership confirmed the approval and introduction of 12 new academic programmes, designed to align TASFUED with modern educational and technological demands.
Among the newly introduced courses are Entrepreneurship Education, Land Transport Planning and Management, Physics and Electronics, and Software Engineering. The addition of these programmes is expected to broaden student choices, attract more applicants, and strengthen the university’s relevance in a rapidly evolving global economy.
Convocation Lecture and Honorary Degrees
The convocation ceremony was further elevated by the announcement of the convocation lecture to be delivered by Dr Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Education. His participation was described as a reflection of the federal government’s interest in the growth and stability of education-focused universities.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to education, governance, and public service, the university also announced the conferment of Honorary Doctor of Science degrees on prominent national figures. Those honoured include Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, and Aremo Olusegun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State.
Student Financial Support and Education Funding
Professor Adeogun also used the occasion to highlight the impact of the National Education Loan Fund, revealing that 6,251 TASFUED students have benefited from the scheme. According to the university, over ₦700 million has been disbursed to eligible students in the current academic session, easing financial pressure and improving access to quality education.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged current and prospective students to take advantage of the initiative, stressing that financial constraints should no longer be a barrier to academic ambition.
A Celebration of Merit and Institutional Progress
The 17th convocation of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education stood out not only as a graduation ceremony but as a powerful statement of academic progress, innovation, and resilience. From the impressive number of First Class graduates to the growing postgraduate output and introduction of new programmes, the event reinforced TASFUED’s position as a key player in Nigeria’s education sector.
