ADMISSION INTO POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FOR THE 2025/2026 ACADEMIC SESSION (FUTMINNA)

The Federal University of Technology, Minna hereby invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into its Postgraduate Programmes for the 2025/2026 Academic Session.

Applications are open for the following categories:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • MPhil/PhD (Combined Programme)
  • Master’s Degrees (MTech, MEng, MSc and related variants)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

Admission is offered through the Postgraduate School in collaboration with the various Schools and Departments of the University. The process is competitive and strictly based on merit, compliance with entry requirements, and availability of supervisory capacity.


1. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All applicants, irrespective of programme category, must satisfy the following general conditions:

1.1 O’Level Requirements

Candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) credit passes at the Senior Secondary School level (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or equivalent), including English Language and Mathematics. The five credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings.

Awaiting results are not acceptable for postgraduate admission.

1.2 NYSC Requirement

All Nigerian applicants must present a valid NYSC Discharge Certificate, Exemption Certificate or Exclusion Letter before final admission can be processed.

1.3 Academic Transcripts

Official academic transcripts from all previously attended institutions must be forwarded to the Postgraduate School. Failure to provide official transcripts may delay or nullify admission.

1.4 Pass Grades

Candidates with a “Pass” degree at any academic level are not eligible for admission into postgraduate programmes.


2. PROGRAMME CATEGORIES AND SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programmes

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for direct admission into the PhD programme, candidates must:

  1. Possess a Master’s degree in a relevant field from FUTMINNA or any other recognised university acceptable to the Senate.
  2. Obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00 scale or at least 60% weighted average in the Master’s degree.
  3. Demonstrate adequate academic preparation in the proposed area of research.

Where a candidate’s background is considered deficient, the Department may prescribe additional coursework.

Nature of Programme

The PhD programme is research-intensive. Candidates are expected to:

  • Develop an approved research proposal.
  • Work under the supervision of qualified academic staff.
  • Complete required seminars and departmental presentations.
  • Defend a thesis before an internal and external examination panel.

Duration

  • Full-Time: Minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 10 semesters.
  • Part-Time: Minimum of 10 semesters and maximum of 14 semesters.

2.2 MPhil/PhD (Combined Programme)

The MPhil/PhD route is designed for candidates whose Master’s performance does not fully meet the direct PhD requirement but shows research potential.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  2. Have a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a 5.00 scale.
  3. Submit three referee reports.

Professional Master’s degrees are not eligible for this route.

Candidates admitted under this category may initially register for MPhil. Upon satisfactory academic performance and assessment, they may be upgraded to PhD status.

Duration

  • Minimum: 2 semesters
  • Maximum: 4 semesters (for the MPhil component before possible upgrade)

2.3 Master’s Degree Programmes (MTech/MEng/MSc)

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must satisfy one of the following:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division (2:2) from FUTMINNA or any recognised university.
  2. A Third Class degree with at least two years relevant post-qualification work experience. Such candidates may be required to pass a qualifying examination.
  3. An HND with at least Lower Credit plus a relevant Postgraduate Diploma and a minimum of one year work experience.

Candidates with a CGPA below 2.50 are not eligible.

Programme Structure

Master’s programmes combine coursework and research. Students must:

  • Complete prescribed taught courses.
  • Achieve the minimum required CGPA.
  • Undertake a supervised research project.
  • Submit and defend a dissertation.

Duration

  • Minimum: 3 semesters
  • Maximum: 6 semesters
  • Mode: Full-Time only

2.4 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Programmes

The PGD programme is designed to:

  • Bridge academic deficiencies.
  • Provide conversion opportunities into new disciplines.
  • Strengthen professional qualifications.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline; or
  2. An HND with at least Lower Credit plus one year relevant work experience.

Pass grades do not qualify.

Duration

  • Minimum: 3 semesters
  • Maximum: 6 semesters

3. AVAILABLE SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMMES

Postgraduate programmes are offered across multiple Schools, including:

  • School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology
  • School of Engineering and Engineering Technology
  • School of Electrical Engineering and Technology
  • School of Environmental Technology
  • School of Innovative Technology
  • School of Information and Communication Technology
  • School of Physical Sciences
  • School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology

Each School offers various specialisations at PhD, Master’s and PGD levels, depending on departmental capacity and research focus.

Applicants are advised to carefully review specific departmental requirements before applying.


4. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The application process is conducted online through the University’s Postgraduate portal.

Steps:

  1. Create an application profile.
  2. Complete the application form accurately.
  3. Upload all required documents.
  4. Provide details of referees where applicable.
  5. Pay the prescribed application fee.
  6. Submit and print acknowledgment slip.

Incomplete applications will not be processed.


5. FEES AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION

5.1 Application Fee

  • ₦15,000 (Non-refundable)
  • Additional transaction/service charges may apply.

5.2 Acceptance Fee

  • ₦20,000 (Non-refundable)
    This must be paid after issuance of provisional admission to confirm acceptance.

5.3 Estimated School Fees (Per Academic Session)

While official figures are released on the postgraduate portal upon admission, indicative ranges are:

  • Non-Engineering Programmes: Approximately ₦80,000 – ₦110,000 per session.
  • Engineering and Technology-Based Programmes: Approximately ₦130,000 – ₦160,000 per session.

These may exclude departmental levies, thesis examination fees, laboratory charges, and other approved fees.

Students are advised to confirm exact payable amounts upon offer of admission.


6. MODE OF STUDY

Programmes may be offered under:

  • Full-Time Mode
  • Part-Time Mode (PhD only)

Applicants should note that Master’s programmes currently operate under Full-Time mode only.


7. APPLICATION PERIOD

7.1 Opening Date

From this date, prospective candidates can begin registration, complete their forms, upload credentials, and make payment for the application.

7.2 Closing Date

The deadline for submission of completed applications is:

Friday, 20 March 2026

All forms must be fully completed and submitted on or before this date. The portal will close automatically at the end of the deadline day, and late applications will not be accepted.
