In a remarkable feat that has captivated the Nigerian academic community, Akindunbi Aduragbemi Isaac, a Civil Engineering graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has set a new academic record with a CGPA of 4.98 out of 5.0. We sat down with Isaac to hear his journey, challenges, and advice to students firsthand.
Early Life and Motivation
Interviewer: Can you tell us about your background and early education?
Isaac: “I’m from Ijero LGA in Ekiti State. I attended Divine Favour Nursery and Primary School in Akure for my early education and went on to Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, for my secondary education. Even then, I had a strong passion for learning and always set high expectations for myself. My parents and teachers encouraged me to be disciplined and to always aim for excellence, which has guided me all through my academic journey.”
Entering FUTA and Setting Goals
Interviewer: What was your mindset when you first joined FUTA?
Isaac: “When I gained admission into FUTA in 2019 to study Civil Engineering, I knew the course would be challenging, but I had a clear goal: to give my absolute best. From my first semester in 100-Level, I scored a CGPA of 4.95, and that motivated me to aim even higher. I realized that success would require not just intelligence, but consistent effort, resilience, and a disciplined study routine.”
Facing Challenges
Interviewer: Were there any major obstacles during your time at university?
Isaac: “Yes, there were a few challenges. In 300-Level, I had a severe toothache during my first semester exams. Later that year, I developed a skin infection that made studying uncomfortable. Then, in my final year, my phone was stolen just five days before exams. Each of these incidents could have derailed me, but I learned to stay calm, focus on my goals, and rely on my support network, including friends and seniors, who encouraged me not to give up.”
Study Techniques That Worked
Interviewer: How did you manage to maintain such an exceptional CGPA?
Isaac: “I believe discipline and strategy were key. At the start of every semester, I created a personal timetable that ensured I covered all my courses. I studied both during the day and at night, depending on what was most effective. I reviewed topics multiple times — first to understand, then to master them so I could even explain them to someone else. I also surrounded myself with like-minded peers who motivated me and shared tips on managing the workload.”
Balancing Passions and Personal Life
Interviewer: How did you balance academics with other interests?
Isaac: “Outside academics, I enjoy video editing and watching football. I’m also a Christian, and my faith has been a great source of strength. Balancing these interests helped me stay refreshed and mentally strong. It’s important not to burn out, and having passions outside your studies can really help maintain focus and motivation.”
Future Plans
Interviewer: What are your plans after graduation?
Isaac: “I plan to gain practical experience in civil engineering, especially in sustainable infrastructure, which I’m passionate about. Afterward, I intend to pursue postgraduate studies to deepen my knowledge and make meaningful contributions to society through sustainable development projects.”
Advice to Students
Interviewer: What advice would you give to students aiming for academic excellence?
Isaac:
- Set Clear Goals: Know exactly what you want to achieve academically.
- Stay Resilient: Challenges will come, but perseverance is key.
- Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with motivated and like-minded people.
- Be Consistent: Discipline and regular study habits outweigh last-minute cramming.

A Record That Inspires
Isaac’s 4.98 CGPA is not only a personal triumph but a source of inspiration for students nationwide. His story emphasizes the power of resilience, discipline, and goal-oriented planning, proving that with the right mindset, Nigerian students can achieve academic feats that rival global standards.
