The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has announced a temporary suspension of admissions into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme for the 2026/2027 academic session. The university clarified that the decision applies for one session only and reiterated its unwavering commitment to the continuity and integrity of the programme.
In an official statement released by the Directorate of Corporate Communication and Protocol and signed by the Registrar, C.O. Adeleye, the university directed candidates who had selected FUTA as their preferred choice for MBBS in the ongoing admissions exercise to make alternative selections without delay. The directive aims to prevent complications in the admissions process for the coming academic year.
Addressing concerns that the MBBS programme had been discontinued, the university’s statement stressed that such interpretations were incorrect and misleading. According to the statement, “The suspension of admission into the programme for the 2026/2027 academic session (one session only) is to engender a seamless academic calendar and facilitate hitch-free clinical training.”
The communication also directly countered contrary narratives circulating online and among the public, stating: “Any information contrary to the above, especially insinuations about the discontinuation of the programme, is false, misleading, and completely at variance with the reality on the ground.”
FUTA further emphasised its long-term role in national health workforce development, stating unequivocally that “FUTA remains committed to the training and production of critical manpower for national well-being and development through its medical programmes.”
According to the statement, the decision to pause new admissions for this session is part of a strategic approach to ensure that students currently enrolled in the MBBS programme receive uninterrupted and high-quality clinical education. The university highlighted ongoing collaboration between its College of Health Sciences and the FUTA Teaching Hospital, a key facility that underpins the clinical training of medical students. The teaching hospital was established through joint efforts involving the federal government, the Ondo State Government, traditional institutions, community stakeholders, and other partners.
In the statement, FUTA also expressed gratitude to key figures and institutions that have supported the realisation of medical training at the university, including national and state government officials and traditional leaders.
Prospective medical students were assured that admissions into the MBBS programme will resume in the next academic session following the single-session pause. The university urged candidates to adjust their choices in the current admissions process to ensure smoother progress toward securing university placements.
