The Federal University of Technology, Minna has secured a place among the top 50 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa in the maiden edition of the QS World University Rankings Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings, marking a major milestone in the institution’s academic journey.
The recognition was formally announced at the official launch event held in Accra, where university leaders from across the continent gathered to witness the unveiling of the first region-specific ranking by QS for Sub-Saharan Africa. The award was received by the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of FUTMINNA, signalling a significant moment of pride for the university community.
The QS Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings assess institutions based on a comprehensive set of performance indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, research output and impact, faculty qualifications, international collaborations, student diversity, and overall institutional influence. By placing within the top 50, FUTMINNA has distinguished itself among hundreds of universities evaluated across the region.
University officials have described the achievement as a validation of years of sustained investment in research, innovation, and quality teaching. Established as a technology-focused institution, FUTMINNA has steadily expanded its research footprint in engineering, applied sciences, environmental technology, and emerging innovation sectors, contributing to its growing regional and international visibility.
Education experts note that inclusion in globally recognised rankings such as QS enhances an institution’s credibility, strengthens its competitiveness for research grants, and improves its attractiveness to both local and international students. It also boosts opportunities for strategic partnerships and academic exchange programmes.
For FUTMINNA, this ranking underscores its rising profile beyond Nigeria and affirms its role as one of the continent’s emerging centres for technological education and research excellence. As the university community celebrates the recognition, attention now turns to how the institution will consolidate this achievement and push for even greater global visibility in future ranking cycles.
With this latest milestone, FUTMINNA has not only elevated its institutional standing but also reinforced its reputation as a leading hub for innovation and academic excellence in Sub-Saharan Africa.
