The Student Union Government (SUG) of Federal University of Technology, Minna has issued a comprehensive update to students following recent developments concerning bike (okada) operations within the university campus, announcing new operational guidelines and a standardized fare structure aimed at enhancing safety, fairness, and security.
In a formal communication addressed to students, the Union disclosed that after its earlier press release suspending bike activities on campus, further engagements were initiated to prevent escalation and ensure a peaceful, lasting resolution. These engagements culminated in a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving the Student Union Government, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, the Commercial Committee, the Bike Men Association, and the University Security Unit.
According to the Union, the meeting was convened to adopt a diplomatic and dialogue-driven approach in addressing widespread student concerns, particularly around safety risks, fare irregularities, and general conduct of bike operators within the campus environment.
After extensive deliberations and careful consideration of students’ welfare and security, key resolutions were unanimously reached and approved for immediate implementation.
Foremost among the resolutions is the introduction of a strict one-passenger-per-ride policy. The practice of carrying two passengers on a single bike has been officially prohibited with immediate effect. The Union explained that this measure is designed to significantly enhance safety on campus roads, reduce the risk of accidents linked to overloading, discourage reckless riding, and strengthen monitoring and overall security across the university community.
In addition to the safety directive, stakeholders agreed on a standardized fare structure to eliminate arbitrary pricing and prevent exploitation of students. The approved fare breakdown is as follows:
School Gate to any Faculty (including School of Infrastructure, Technology and Innovation – SIT): ₦200 per person.
School Gate to Hostel: ₦300 per person.
Hostel to any Faculty: ₦200 per person.
The Union emphasized that these rates are binding on all registered bike operators within the campus and must be strictly adhered to without exception.
Students have been advised to take note of the newly approved fares and operational guidelines. Any rider found violating the one-passenger policy, charging above the agreed rates, or acting contrary to the established resolutions should be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities.
The Student Union further encouraged students who observe price hikes, misconduct, or any breach of the new directives to promptly contact the Director of Welfare or any member of the SUG Executive Council for swift and decisive action.
Reaffirming its commitment to student protection and campus stability, the Union stated that it remains dedicated to safeguarding the interests of the student body through dialogue, diplomacy, and firm enforcement where necessary. However, it stressed that the effectiveness of these measures will depend largely on the cooperation, vigilance, and collective responsibility of all students.
