FUTMINNA SUG Suspends Okada Operations Indefinitely at Gidan Kwano Campus Over Fare Hike Dispute

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Federal University of Technology Minna has announced the temporary suspension of all bike (Okada) operations within the Gidan Kwano Campus, citing persistent fare violations and non-compliance by operators.

In an official notice addressed to students, the Union confirmed that the suspension will take effect from Thursday, February 26, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.

The decision follows a series of meetings and negotiations between the SUG leadership and the campus Bike Association over approved transportation fares. According to the Union, despite reaching mutual agreements on standardized rates, there have been continuous reports of price hiking by some operators, contrary to the agreed structure.

The SUG stated that the measure became necessary after repeated concerns from students regarding arbitrary fare increases and exploitation.

“The welfare and financial well-being of students remain our utmost priority. The Union cannot tolerate any action that imposes unnecessary hardship on students,” the statement read.

Bike transportation is a major means of mobility within the expansive Gidan Kwano Campus, with many students relying on the service daily to attend lectures, access hostels, and move between faculties. The suspension is therefore expected to significantly impact campus movement in the short term.

However, the Union assured students that discussions with the Bike Association will continue in a bid to reach a lasting resolution that protects students’ interests while ensuring fair operational standards for transport providers.

Students have been urged to remain calm and cooperative as engagements progress. The SUG also indicated that alternative transportation arrangements are being explored to ease mobility challenges during the suspension period, with further updates to be communicated in due course.
