The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections, setting the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, 20 February 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for Saturday, 6 March 2027. The announcement was made on Friday, 13 February 2026, in Abuja during a press briefing by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN.
Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the timetable was developed strictly in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022, ensuring compliance with statutory and legal requirements.
“In accordance with the approved Timetable and Schedule of Activities, Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on Saturday, 20th February 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will be on Saturday, 6th March 2027,” he said.
He explained that the full timetable and schedule of activities have been circulated to all registered political parties and relevant stakeholders, and is accessible for public awareness.
“This action is taken pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandate the Commission to publish the Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for the election,” Prof. Amupitan stated.
The INEC Chairman highlighted that the Commission’s authority to fix election dates is derived exclusively from the law, stressing the importance of providing sufficient lead time for political parties, civil society organizations, and voters to prepare for the electoral process.
“As an independent electoral body, we are committed to upholding the rule of law. The timely announcement of the election date is a critical step, allowing political parties, civil society organisations, and the electorate to prepare adequately,” he said.
INEC also outlined pre-election activities including party primaries, nomination submissions, and campaign periods, directing all Resident Electoral Commissioners to ensure the timetable is published within their constituencies.
Stakeholder Reactions and Calls for Review
Following the announcement, concerns were raised over the overlap of the proposed election dates with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, expected to run from early February to early March 2027. Some political figures argued that scheduling elections during this period could limit participation, particularly among fasting voters.
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad appealed to INEC to reconsider the timetable:
“If the goal is to ensure full and inclusive participation in the electoral process, scheduling such a major national exercise during Ramadan may present challenges for a large segment of the population.”
Other observers also highlighted that elections conducted during religious observances could reduce voter turnout and affect the overall inclusiveness of the electoral process.
INEC’s Response to Timing Concerns
In response, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, assured the public that the Commission remains sensitive to legitimate concerns and would take them into consideration.
“The Commission wishes to assure the public that it remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections.”
Haruna also indicated that INEC may seek legislative intervention if necessary to address any issues raised by stakeholders, while ensuring any adjustments comply with constitutional and statutory frameworks.
