Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has delivered a passionate address following the dramatic rescue of about 140 pupils from a raging fire that engulfed parts of Noorul-Haq School in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday evening.
The incident occurred on February 28, 2026, when thick smoke was seen rising from the Islamic school located in the state capital. The governor’s convoy was reportedly passing through the area when he noticed the unusual smoke and immediately ordered a stop.
Addressing journalists at the scene shortly after the fire was brought under control, Governor Idris recounted the moment he realised the gravity of the situation.
“We were on our way when I saw heavy smoke coming out from this direction,” the governor said. “At first, I thought it was a minor incident, perhaps someone burning refuse. But when we moved closer, I realised it was a school building on fire. At that point, there was no time to waste.”
He explained that he immediately directed members of his convoy, security operatives, and nearby residents to begin evacuating the children from the affected buildings while emergency services were contacted.
“Our priority was the safety of the children,” he said. “These are innocent young pupils. We could not stand by and watch. I instructed everyone around to assist in bringing them out safely, and we thank Almighty Allah that not a single life was lost.”
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the governor personally supervised the evacuation process as terrified pupils were led out of the compound. The presence of gas cylinders within parts of the school reportedly intensified the blaze, raising fears of possible explosions and adding urgency to the rescue efforts.
In his remarks, Governor Idris commended the swift response of the state fire service and other emergency personnel who later arrived at the scene.
“I want to appreciate our firefighters and security agencies for their professionalism and bravery,” he stated. “They worked tirelessly to ensure that the fire was contained and prevented from spreading further to neighbouring buildings.”
The governor remained at the school premises for several hours until the fire was fully extinguished, breaking his Ramadan fast at the scene alongside members of his team.
Speaking directly to parents and guardians, he offered reassurance over the safety of their children.
“I want to assure every parent and guardian that all the pupils have been accounted for,” he said. “Your children are safe. The government will not take this incident lightly. We will ensure that proper measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.”
Governor Idris further announced the immediate constitution of a high-powered investigative committee to determine the cause of the fire.
“We have directed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation,” he declared. “We must know exactly what happened here. If there were lapses in safety standards, they will be identified and addressed decisively. The safety of our children in every school across Kebbi State is non-negotiable.”
He added that the state government would assess the level of damage to the school infrastructure and provide necessary support to restore academic activities as quickly as possible.
“As a government, we will stand with this institution,” he assured. “Education remains a top priority for our administration, and we will do everything within our power to ensure that learning continues without disruption.”ed
