NLNG Boosts Academic Dreams: ₦300,000 Annual Undergraduate Scholarship Opens for Nigerian First‑Year Students

In a visionary move to nurture Nigeria’s next generation of leaders, Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has officially launched its 2025/2026 Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme (UGSS), offering a generous ₦300,000 per year award to eligible first‑year undergraduates in Nigerian public universities. The program not only reinforces NLNG’s commitment to education but also serves as a catalyst to human capital development across the country.

What the NLNG UGSS Is All About

The NLNG UGSS is a merit-based scholarship designed to empower high-achieving students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. By targeting first-year undergraduates in the 2025/2026 academic session, NLNG aims to invest in fresh talent and ensure that financial barriers do not stifle academic potential.

This award is renewable, meaning that as long as a scholar maintains satisfactory academic performance, they can continue to benefit for the duration of their degree.

Key Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must meet a comprehensive set of requirements, underscoring NLNG’s commitment to fairness and high standards:

  • Citizenship & Residence: Must be a Nigerian citizen currently living in Nigeria.
  • Academic Status: Must be a full-time first-year undergraduate (100-level) in the 2025/2026 academic year, enrolled in a federal or state-owned Nigerian university.
  • O‑Level Requirements: A minimum of five credits in O-Level examinations, in one sitting, and these must include Mathematics and English.
  • JAMB Score: Minimum UTME score of 200.
  • Age Limit: Between 18 and 25 years at the time of application.
  • No Other Scholarship: Applicants must not already be recipients of another scholarship, bursary, or grant.

  • Inclusivity: NLNG encourages applications from all eligible students, including Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).

Required Documents & Application Process

NLNG has made the application process largely digital, but requires a precise set of documents and verification steps to ensure credibility and fairness:

  1. Passport Photograph: Recent photo with a white background, no glasses.
  2. O‑Level Results: Scanned copies of WAEC, NECO, SSCE, or equivalent.
  3. UTME Result: Applicants must submit their JAMB UTME score.
  4. Admission Letter: A copy of the university admission letter (JAMB or institution).
  5. Birth Certificate: Must be from the National Population Commission.
  6. Local Government Identification: An LGA-issued identification letter is required.
  7. NIN Slip: National Identification Number (NIN) must be provided.

Selection Process:

  • After application, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for an online proctored computer-based selection test.
  • Only those who pass the test will submit additional documents for final verification.
  • Awards are made only to those who meet all the eligibility and selection criteria.

Deadline & Important Dates

The application window for this scholarship closes on 12 December 2025 at 11:59 PM (WAT).

Why This Scholarship Matters

  1. Significant Financial Support
₦300,000 per year is a substantial amount for undergraduates in Nigeria, covering a meaningful portion of tuition, living, and study-related expenses. This level of support can reduce financial strain, allowing students to focus more on their academics.
  2. Long-Term Investment
Because the scholarship is renewable, NLNG is not just making a one-off grant; it’s investing in sustained academic success. This encourages scholars to perform well, as continued eligibility depends on maintaining good results.
  3. Merit & Inclusivity Combined
The scholarship is merit-based but also inclusive: by requiring academic excellence and excluding existing scholarship beneficiaries, NLNG ensures the support goes to those who need and deserve it most. Their explicit encouragement for PLWDs adds a commendable layer of social responsibility.
  4. Human Capital Development
NLNG’s initiative aligns with broader national development goals. By supporting undergraduates at public universities, NLNG contributes to raising the quality of graduates who may go on to drive innovation, leadership, and economic progress in Nigeria.

Challenges & Advice to Applicants

Challenges:

  • Competition: Given the generous amount, many will apply; being shortlisted for the test may not be easy.
  • Documentation: Some students may struggle to provide LGA identification letters or birth certificates, especially if they lack such records.
  • Age Restriction: The cap at 25 years means many potential applicants may be disqualified.
  • No Other Scholarship: If a student is already on another scholarship, they cannot apply — they must weigh whether to switch or stay.

Advice:

  • Prepare Early: Start gathering your documents — LGA letter, birth certificate, NIN, admission letter — well before the deadline.
  • Practice for the Test: Since there is a selection test, you should practice online-proctored mock exams, especially timed ones, to build confidence.
  • Apply Honestly: Ensure that all information submitted is accurate; inconsistency or false data can disqualify you.
  • Follow Up: After applying, check your email regularly and monitor communications, because the selection test invitation may come via email.
  • Stay Academically Strong: Even after winning, the scholarship is performance-based. Plan your first year well to maintain grades.
