The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 14 postgraduate programmes for Newgate University Minna in Niger State, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic development and its growing role in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The approval followed a successful resource verification exercise conducted by the commission to evaluate the university’s academic preparedness, staffing strength, facilities, and capacity to run advanced degree programmes.
University authorities confirmed that the approval now allows the institution to formally launch postgraduate studies, with plans already underway to admit the first batch of postgraduate students starting from May 2026.
Vice-Chancellor Confirms Development
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Sadiq Yusuf, disclosed the development during a briefing at the university’s Senate Chamber in Minna.
According to him, the approval represents a major leap forward for the institution, as it expands its academic offerings beyond undergraduate education into advanced research and professional training.
He explained that the university had undergone rigorous scrutiny from officials of the NUC during the verification process, where the commission assessed lecture halls, laboratories, library resources, faculty qualifications, research infrastructure, and overall institutional readiness.
Following the evaluation, the commission granted the university permission to commence a number of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master’s, and Doctoral programmes across multiple academic disciplines.
List of Approved Postgraduate Programmes
The newly approved postgraduate programmes span various fields including management, technology, finance, international relations, and public health.
At the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) level, the programmes include:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Management
- Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting
- Postgraduate Diploma in Finance
- Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science
- Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health
For the Master’s degree programmes, the university will offer:
- MSc Accounting
- MSc Computing
- MSc Cyber Security
- MSc Public Health
- MSc International Relations
The NUC also approved doctoral programmes in the following areas:
- PhD Computer Science
- PhD Cyber Security
- PhD Accounting
- PhD Public Health
- PhD Management Studies
- PhD International Relations
University officials also revealed that additional professional postgraduate programmes and executive degrees are expected to run alongside these academic programmes, particularly in fields related to business administration, strategic studies, development studies, and diplomacy.
Strengthening Research and Academic Excellence
Speaking further on the development, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the launch of postgraduate programmes would significantly strengthen research output, academic scholarship, and professional training within the university.
He added that the institution is committed to building a vibrant postgraduate school that will focus on innovation, policy research, leadership development, and practical solutions to societal challenges.
According to him, the university has already recruited additional academic staff and improved research facilities to support the new postgraduate programmes.
Rapid Growth of Newgate University
Since its establishment, Newgate University Minna has steadily expanded its academic programmes and student population.
The university currently offers 16 undergraduate programmes, and its student enrollment has grown from about 300 students at its early stage to more than 2,000 students within four years.
With the introduction of postgraduate programmes, the institution aims to position itself as a centre for advanced learning, research, and professional development, particularly in fields that are critical to Nigeria’s economic and technological growth.
