In a major milestone for Nigeria’s private university system, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the commencement of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, alongside several postgraduate programmes at Salem University, Lokoja. This development marks a new era for the faith-based institution, signaling its steady rise among Nigeria’s fast-growing higher education centers.

A New Academic Era for Salem University

Salem University, which has long been recognized for its focus on holistic education and moral excellence, has achieved a landmark academic upgrade. The approval from the NUC allows the university to offer advanced degree programmes, including:

  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
  • Master’s Degree (MSc)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

These programmes will initially be available in key disciplines such as Biochemistry, Mass Communication, and International Relations.

Additionally, the university has secured accreditation to run the MBBS (Medicine and Surgery) programme, positioning it among a select group of private universities in Nigeria authorized to train medical doctors.

Vice-Chancellor Commends NUC and University Community

Speaking shortly after the approval was confirmed, Professor Alewo Johnson Akubo, the Vice-Chancellor of Salem University, described the development as “a monumental achievement” and an “answer to years of investment, dedication, and faith.”

According to him, the NUC’s decision came after a rigorous accreditation and verification process, during which teams of experts inspected the university’s infrastructure, laboratories, libraries, and academic resources.

He expressed deep gratitude to the founding Chancellor, Archbishop Sam Amaga, the university’s management team, and the entire Salem community for their unwavering support and commitment to excellence.

“This approval is not just for Salem University; it is for every student and parent who believes in the power of quality education. It confirms that our university has met the national standards required to train medical professionals and postgraduate scholars,” the VC said.

Strengthened Facilities and Academic Resources

One of the key factors that influenced the NUC’s decision was the university’s massive investment in infrastructure and academic facilities. Over the past few years, Salem University has upgraded its:

  • Science laboratories equipped with advanced research instruments.
  • Digital learning systems that support hybrid and online learning.
  • Modern library facilities stocked with thousands of journals and e-resources.
  • Well-structured classrooms designed for interactive learning.

For the MBBS programme, the university also established pre-clinical and clinical laboratories, and is collaborating with reputable hospitals within Kogi State and beyond to provide medical students with practical, hands-on training.

Immediate Commencement of Admissions

Following the approval, Salem University announced that admissions into the newly accredited programmes will commence immediately for the 2025/2026 academic session.

This means qualified candidates can now apply for:

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Biochemistry, Mass Communication, and International Relations
  • MSc and PhD programmes in the same fields.

The university management has assured prospective students of a transparent and merit-based admission process, emphasizing that all programmes will be delivered by highly qualified lecturers and professionals with local and international expertise.

Impact on Nigeria’s Education Landscape

The inclusion of the MBBS and postgraduate degrees at Salem University represents a significant advancement for private university education in Nigeria.

In a country where medical training slots are limited and competition is fierce, the addition of another accredited MBBS programme helps reduce the burden on public universities and widens access for aspiring doctors.

Furthermore, the postgraduate approvals will strengthen the country’s research capacity, especially in key areas such as public health, biotechnology, communication, and international diplomacy — fields that are crucial for national development.

A Vision for Excellence and Nation-Building

Founded with a mission to raise “global leaders who are spiritually alive, intellectually alert, and socially responsible,” Salem University has consistently maintained a reputation for discipline and moral uprightness.

The recent approval reinforces the institution’s founding vision — to combine academic excellence with character development.

Professor Akubo reaffirmed that Salem University remains committed to:

  • Providing world-class education in a serene and secure environment.
  • Promoting innovation, research, and community development.
  • Training graduates who will contribute positively to Nigeria’s growth and the global economy.

“Our doors are open to all who share our passion for knowledge, innovation, and leadership. With this new phase, Salem University is ready to make history once again,” the Vice-Chancellor added.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Salem University

With this latest NUC approval, Salem University joins the ranks of Nigerian private universities offering medical degrees and advanced research opportunities. The institution’s determination to expand its academic portfolio highlights its readiness to compete globally and attract international partnerships.

As the 2025/2026 admission season approaches, Salem University stands out as a promising destination for students seeking medical, scientific, and postgraduate education in an environment built on excellence, integrity, and innovation.
