Power Supply Disruptions on Campus Linked to Statewide Electricity Transition — SUG Appeals for Patience

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) has formally addressed the ongoing unstable electricity supply affecting students on campus, clarifying that the situation is part of a broader statewide power transition and not a campus-specific failure.

In an official notice released by the SUG 25/26 administration, the union explained that the current electricity challenges are connected to the restructuring process under the Niger State Electricity Company, following the transition from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

According to information made available to the union, electricity is presently being supplied at 11KV instead of the standard 33KV. This technical downgrade in voltage supply has significantly reduced power capacity and stability across the state, resulting in the irregular electricity experienced within the campus community, including Gidan Kwano (GK), and other parts of Niger State.

The SUG emphasized that the situation is not peculiar to the university environment but part of a broader infrastructural adjustment currently affecting multiple areas as the transition process remains ongoing.

The union acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the unstable power supply, particularly at a time when students depend heavily on electricity for academic activities, research, online engagements, and personal needs. It expressed sincere sympathy to all students affected by the situation and reassured the campus community that the disruption is temporary.

According to the statement, normal and stable power supply is expected to be restored once the transition and restructuring process is fully stabilised.

The Students’ Union therefore appealed to students to remain calm, patient, and understanding during this period, assuring them that relevant authorities are actively engaged and working toward resolving the situation.

The notice was issued by Comr. Muhammad Nurudeen Liman (DE-PROF), Public Relations Officer, SUG 25/26, e-signed by Comr. Arowosegbe Daniel Precious (OLUWADANIEL), Secretary General, and released on behalf of Comr. Sen Adaidu Ezekiel Machofo (CALCULUS), Executive President, SUG 25/26.

As the transition unfolds, students will be hoping for a swift stabilisation of supply to restore normal campus operations and ease the current strain on academic life.
