Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a recent interview with Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese‑Ijebu, she expressed unwavering confidence in her ability to secure the party’s nomination and ultimately win the general election.
This marks a significant return to Nigerian politics for Prof. Obasanjo, who has spent more than 15 years away from frontline political engagements, pursuing an academic career in the United States. She re-registered as a member of the APC at Ibogun Ward 11, Ifo Local Government, formally signaling her readiness to compete in the highly contested gubernatorial race. Her political resume includes serving as Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007, and later as Senator representing Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011, providing her with both legislative and executive experience at the state level.
Speaking on her confidence, Prof. Obasanjo acknowledged the competitive nature of the APC primary but insisted that her skills, experience, and track record of service position her favorably. “I am confident of winning the APC governorship ticket for Ogun State because I have the ideas, experience, and commitment required to serve the people effectively,” she stated. While noting the challenges of late entry into the race and limited financial resources, she emphasized that her campaign will focus on public trust, credibility, and service delivery, rather than relying solely on monetary strength.
Prof. Obasanjo also addressed the ongoing conversation around zoning and political representation in Ogun State. She recognized the calls for the next governor to emerge from Ogun West but clarified that zoning is not a constitutional requirement. She pledged, however, that if elected, she would ensure her administration supports the emergence of a governor from Ogun West in subsequent elections. On gender, she noted that her candidacy is grounded in merit and capability, stressing that her focus is on governance and the welfare of Ogun people rather than using gender as a political tool.
Political analysts suggest that her entry into the race significantly reshapes the gubernatorial landscape in Ogun State. With her high-profile name, political pedigree, and previous public service experience, Prof. Obasanjo has positioned herself as a formidable contender, even as she navigates a primary field filled with experienced politicians and well-resourced aspirants. Observers note that the outcome will largely depend on party dynamics, grassroots support, and the ability to mobilize voters across the state.
