Public affairs analyst, Peter Eze, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and some of his spokespersons against taking the recent warning issued by former United States President, Donald Trump, as ordinary political banter or what he described as “gutter talk.” Eze stressed that the remarks carry serious diplomatic and geopolitical weight that the Nigerian government must not ignore.
According to him, the response from some of the President’s media aides was not only careless but also embarrassing, considering the level of responsibility attached to their offices.
Eze Criticizes Tinubu’s Spokespersons
Eze, in his reaction, accused some of the President’s media aides of responding to Trump in what he termed an unguarded, emotional, and street-level manner, instead of approaching the issue with strategic communication and diplomatic reasoning.
He argued that calling Trump’s comments mere propaganda or political noise is dangerous, adding that such remarks from influential global figures are never made without deeper implications.
“This is not Twitter. This is not a beer-parlour conversation. Those speaking for the President must understand that Nigeria is a sovereign nation with diplomatic relationships and global interests. You do not defend a nation by reacting like a street blogger,” Eze stated.
Why Trump’s Remarks Should Not Be Ignored
Eze explained that Trump’s statement, regardless of how it was framed, should be analyzed beyond face value, especially given the United States’ influence on global policy, sanctions, international security channels, and diplomatic cooperation.
He warned that dismissing the message could lead to:
- Heightened international scrutiny
- Increased pressure from global human rights organizations
- Strained diplomatic relations
- Economic or foreign aid implications
Eze maintained that Nigeria must handle the situation with caution, restraint, and intelligence.
“Nigeria’s Image Is Not A Casual Topic” – Eze
The analyst lamented what he described as “the growing culture of arrogance and reactionary media behavior” within the current administration. He said national image management is not what should be entrusted to aides who react impulsively without consultation or strategic planning.
“When those who represent a country speak without diplomacy, the entire country suffers. Nations build influence through communication, not confrontation,” he added.
Calls For Strategic Communication
Eze advised the Tinubu administration to:
- Evaluate the diplomatic context of Trump’s statement.
- Consult foreign policy experts before responding further.
- Address legitimate security concerns raised, rather than dismissing them.
- Engage international partners with professionalism and tact.
He noted that how Nigeria responds now will determine how the world interprets its stability, leadership direction, and political maturity.
