Tragedy on Benue Waters: Boat Mishap Kills Students, Scores Still Missing

In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves across Benue State and the nation at large, at least six people — mostly students — have been confirmed dead following a boat mishap at the Buruku crossing in Buruku Local Government Area, while several others remain unaccounted for. The incident occurred late on January 19, 2026, as the ill-fated vessel capsized during a routine river crossing.

Night Journey Turns Deadly

The ill-fated accident took place on the River Buruku, a key inland waterway in Benue, as students and other passengers were returning to their schools and communities after the long holiday. Eyewitnesses reported that the wooden boat was heavily laden, carrying both passengers and vehicles, when it suddenly sank midway through the journey.

Rescue efforts recovered around 35 survivors, but so far six deaths have been confirmed — most of them students from various nearby communities who were heading back to schools in locations such as Gboko and surrounding areas. The search for the missing continues, with authorities and volunteers combing the river for additional victims.

A Community in Mourning

The news has plunged families, friends, and local communities into grief, with many residents expressing outrage at what they describe as avoidable tragedies that have marred Benue’s waterways in the past. One eyewitness lamented that such mishaps are not new and attributed the accident to overloading and poor safety practices on river transport.

Several relatives of the missing have appealed for urgent rescue operations, while schools and community leaders have called for coordinated response measures to help affected families and ensure the safe return of survivors.

Government Response and Investigation

In the aftermath of the accident, Benue State authorities swiftly mobilised rescue teams, tapping state and local emergency units to intensify search and recovery operations. The Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has also been reportedly involved, with officials expressing grave concern and deep distress over the tragic loss of life.

A formal investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the mishap, with early pointers including possible violations of safety regulations, operational negligence, and failure to adhere to established standards for inland water transport. Authorities have promised a transparent and uncompromising inquiry, which may result in sanctions against parties found culpable.

Recurring Risk on Nigeria’s Waterways

Boat accidents have been a recurrent cause of fatalities in Nigeria, particularly in communities that depend on river transport for daily travel and commerce. From Benue to Sokoto, Yobe and beyond, multiple mishaps in recent years have highlighted persistent safety challenges, including overloading, lack of life jackets, poor vessel maintenance, and insufficient regulation of inland water transport systems.

These tragedies have repeatedly underscored the urgent need for stronger enforcement of safety protocols, improved emergency response capabilities, and better community education on waterway risks.
