Tragic Death of UI Medical Student After Allegedly Ingesting Insecticide

The University of Ibadan (UI) community has been shaken by the death of a 300‑level medical student who reportedly ingested an insecticide known as Sniper on Sunday evening. The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found unconscious by fellow undergraduates on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, foaming at the mouth and disoriented.

According to sources, the student admitted to taking the insecticide before collapsing. His roommates quickly alerted hall authorities, who arranged for his immediate transfer to Jaja Clinic via the Students’ Union bus service. At the clinic, he received emergency care, including oxygen and intravenous fluids, before being moved to the University College Hospital (UCH) emergency unit. Despite being placed on life support, the student tragically passed away later that same day.

The Public Relations Officer of UCH, Funmi Adetuyibi, confirmed the death, stating that the hospital had responded urgently after receiving information about the ingestion of Sniper. Authorities notified the student’s parents, who reside in Akure, Ondo State, prior to his passing. While his parents suggested the possibility of poisoning, roommates maintained that the student had openly admitted to ingesting the insecticide.

Friends and colleagues of the deceased reported noticing behavioral changes in the weeks leading up to the incident. These included withdrawal from social activities, missing lectures, and avoiding communication with his family. The circumstances surrounding the ingestion remain under investigation, and UI authorities have urged students to remain vigilant and support one another during this difficult period.
