In recent days, students residing in Gidan Kwano have experienced unstable and inconsistent electricity supply. Understandably, this has generated frustration across hostels, off-campus lodges, and academic areas. However, it is important to clarify the facts and correct the growing misconception surrounding the situation.
The current power disruption is not a campus-specific issue, nor is it caused by the Students’ Union Government (SUG).
The major factor behind the poor electricity supply is ongoing maintenance operations by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). As the federal agency responsible for transmitting bulk electricity nationwide, TCN oversees high-voltage transmission infrastructure that distributes power from generation companies to distribution companies.
When maintenance is carried out on transmission lines, substations, or related infrastructure, load reduction and temporary outages become unavoidable. These disruptions often affect multiple regions simultaneously — not just a single campus or community.
Reports confirm that the impact is being felt beyond Gidan Kwano. Residents in Bosso have reported similar power challenges. Additionally, parts of Abuja have also experienced fluctuating electricity supply during this maintenance period.
This clearly shows that the issue is transmission-related and not a failure of campus administration or student leadership.
Engagements are ongoing to ensure that normal supply is restored as quickly as possible.
Current updates indicate that the maintenance work is temporary, and electricity supply is expected to stabilize once the process is completed.
