Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon when Balogun Sultan, a National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), was shot and killed during a military operation in the Yaba area of Lagos State. Sultan, a student in the college’s distance learning programme, was returning home after completing an examination when the fatal incident occurred.
The Incident
Eyewitnesses reported that Sultan had just finished a Research Methods assignment and examination at the YABATECH campus and was proceeding to the WAEC bus stop, a common transport hub for students and commuters, when security personnel conducted an operation in the area. The operation, allegedly aimed at controlling a reported cult clash nearby, reportedly involved the use of live ammunition. Sultan was hit during the exchange and fell critically wounded.
Bystanders described scenes of panic as commuters and students scrambled for safety. Several witnesses attempted to administer first aid at the scene before rushing Sultan to the Military Hospital in Yaba, where medical teams performed emergency procedures in a desperate effort to save him. Despite the medical intervention, Sultan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
