he Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced a significant and unprecedented increase in the monthly allowance paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state. The allowance, which previously stood at ₦4,000, has now been raised to as high as ₦50,000 per month, depending on where each corps member is deployed within the state.
This bold welfare move has been widely praised across the country, with many describing it as one of the most progressive and youth-friendly policies by any state government in recent years.
A New Era Of Support For Corps Members
The governor explained that the new allowance structure is aimed at enhancing the living conditions of corps members, encouraging productivity, and appreciating their contribution to community and public service. While corps members nationwide receive a federal allowance, most rely heavily on state stipends to meet daily needs, especially those posted to regions with high living costs.
Under the new arrangement:
- Corps members serving in state ministries and government agencies will now receive ₦30,000 monthly.
- Those posted to schools, especially public secondary schools, will receive ₦50,000 monthly in recognition of their vital role in the education sector.
- A base minimum allowance of ₦20,000 applies to all corps members in the state.
This represents more than a 1,000% increment from the previous ₦4,000 monthly payment — a scale of improvement rarely seen in corps member welfare across Nigeria.
Why The Increment Matters
Corps members often face financial challenges during their service year, particularly in accommodation, feeding, transportation, and teaching materials for those posted to schools. The new allowance is expected to:
- Provide corps members with better financial stability
- Improve morale and productivity in workplaces
- Encourage more corps members to accept postings in rural communities
- Strengthen the education and health systems where corps members are heavily involved
It is also expected to make Abia one of the most preferred states for NYSC postings in the coming years.
Upgrading The NYSC Orientation Camp
In addition to the allowance raise, the Otti-led administration has commenced rehabilitation and modernization of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area. These improvements include:
- Dormitory upgrades
- Improved toilets and water systems
- Repairs of electricity infrastructure
- Renovation of training and administrative facilities
This step aims to ensure that incoming corps members are welcomed into a comfortable, safe, and supportive environment.
Governor Otti’s Commitment To Youth Development
Governor Otti emphasized that youth empowerment and human capital development remain at the center of his administration’s vision. By increasing the allowance and improving camp facilities, his government is not only rewarding service but also investing in the state’s future workforce.
His decision has sparked nationwide discussions, with many calling on other state governments to emulate Abia by providing better welfare support to corps members.
Public Reaction
The announcement has gained widespread commendation from:
- NYSC officials
- Former and current corps members
- Civil society organizations
- Education and youth development advocates
Many described the move as timely, thoughtful, and impactful, especially as the rising cost of living continues to affect young Nigerians.
