The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is the qualifying examination for students completing Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) in Nigeria. What Is BECE?
BECE is conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO) for Junior Secondary School students across Nigeria. Results are graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with 1 being the highest and 9 being the lowest (failure). A grade of 1 to 6 is a credit or above.
When Are BECE 2026 Results Released?
NECO typically releases BECE results about 6 to 8 weeks after the examination concludes. The 2026 BECE examination was held in July 2026, so results are expected between August and September 2026. NECO announces the release date on its official website at neco.gov.ng and through press releases.
How to Check BECE Results 2026 Online
- Visit the NECO official website at neco.gov.ng or the result checking portal at result.neco.gov.ng.
- Select “BECE” from the examination type dropdown.
- Enter your Examination Number (found on your NECO examination slip).
- Enter the examination year: 2026.
- Pay the result checking fee if prompted (typically ₦500–₦1,000 using the provided payment options).
- Click “Submit” to view your result.
How to Check BECE Results via SMS
NECO also allows result checking via SMS. Send your Examination Number to the NECO shortcode provided on the official website. The result will be returned as a text message. Note that network charges apply.
Understanding Your BECE Result
Your BECE result shows grades in each subject on a scale of 1–9. For progression to SSS, most states require a pass (grade 6 or better) in core subjects — English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science, Social Studies, and at least two other subjects. If you score grade 7, 8, or 9 in a subject, it is a failure.
What Happens After BECE?
Candidates who pass proceed to Senior Secondary School (SSS 1). You will be placed in a subject combination track — Science, Arts, or Commercial — based on your grades and your school’s guidance. Some states allow students to choose their preferred track regardless of BECE result, while others use the result to make placements.
BECE does not directly affect university admission — it is your WAEC and NECO SSCE (Senior School Certificate Examination) results at the end of SSS 3 that determine university eligibility. However, a strong BECE result gives you access to better senior secondary schools and subject combinations.
What If You Failed BECE?
Students who fail one or more BECE subjects can resit the examination in the next available sitting. Alternatively, many states allow students to proceed conditionally and address failures before SSS 3.
