A 43-year-old man, Lateef Suleiman, has been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly killing his elder brother with a heavy rock in Sepeteri, a community in Saki East Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the Alegunlode Compound area of Sepeteri, has sent shockwaves through the Oke-Ogun axis of the state, as residents struggle to come to terms with what authorities have described as a deeply disturbing domestic homicide.
According to police sources, the suspect allegedly attacked his 52-year-old brother, Mustapha Amidu, after claiming that the deceased had shot him in a dream the previous night. Investigators said Suleiman reportedly confronted his brother over the dream and, during the confrontation, picked up a heavy rock and struck him violently on the head.
Witnesses in the compound were said to have raised alarm immediately after the assault. Neighbours rushed the injured man to Ileri Oluwa Hospital in Sepeteri, but medical personnel on duty reportedly confirmed him dead on arrival due to the severity of the head injuries sustained.
The case was first reported at the Ago-Amodu Divisional Police Headquarters by a resident of the community, prompting officers to swiftly move to the scene. Detectives visited both the crime scene and the hospital to document evidence and commence preliminary investigations.
The spokesperson of the command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident. During interrogation, Suleiman allegedly confessed to the act, maintaining that he carried out the attack because of the dream in which he believed his brother had harmed him.
Following the development, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, ordered that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive and discreet investigation. The police authorities assured members of the public that due process would be followed and that the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.
Community members described the incident as shocking and unprecedented, noting that there had been no known violent dispute between the brothers prior to the attack. Residents said the family is now grappling with both grief and disbelief over the sudden loss.
