Students, Teachers Escape Death as Four-Storey School Building Collapses in Ogba, Lagos

A potential tragedy was narrowly averted in the Ogba area of Lagos after a four-storey building housing a private school suddenly collapsed, forcing students, teachers, and residents to flee for safety moments before the structure gave way.

The incident occurred on Monday at a building located on Adudatu Street in the Aguda axis of Ogba, where Yemco Nursery and Primary School operates alongside a secondary section of the institution.

According to eyewitnesses, classes were already in session when signs of structural distress were reportedly noticed within the building. Teachers and school staff quickly sensed danger after observing unusual vibrations and cracks within the structure.

Realising the potential risk, the school management immediately ordered an emergency evacuation of the premises. Teachers hurriedly led pupils out of their classrooms while ensuring that every student moved away from the building.

Residents in the area said the quick response by the school authorities proved crucial, as the structure reportedly collapsed shortly after the evacuation had been completed.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as students rushed out of the building, leaving behind school bags and other belongings while teachers worked to maintain order during the evacuation process. Some pupils were said to have sustained minor injuries during the rush to exit the building.

Moments later, a loud crashing sound was heard across the neighbourhood as the four-storey structure caved in, sending dust and debris into the surrounding area and drawing crowds of shocked residents to the scene.

Emergency responders and officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency later arrived at the site to assess the situation and ensure that no one was trapped beneath the rubble.

Preliminary assessments indicated that no lives were lost in the incident, largely due to the swift evacuation carried out before the collapse occurred.

However, the building suffered extensive structural damage, raising fresh concerns about the safety of structures used as schools in densely populated areas of Lagos.

Authorities have yet to officially determine the cause of the collapse, though structural failure and possible construction defects are being considered as part of the ongoing investigation.
