Engineering is one of the broadest degree categories in Nigerian universities — it covers Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Agricultural, Computer, Petroleum, and several other disciplines. The good news is that O’Level requirements are largely consistent across most engineering types. Here’s what you need.
Required O’Level Subjects for Engineering
For virtually all engineering programmes at Nigerian universities, you need five credit passes including: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and one additional science or technical subject. That fifth subject is usually Biology, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, or Further Mathematics — depending on the university and the specific engineering discipline.
The non-negotiables are English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. These four are required by every engineering faculty in Nigeria without exception. The fifth subject gives some flexibility depending on your school of choice.

JAMB Subject Combination for Engineering
For all engineering disciplines in Nigeria, the standard JAMB combination is: Use of English (compulsory), Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry. This applies across Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Agricultural, Petroleum, and most other engineering types. Computer Engineering at most schools uses Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry as well — though a few schools accept Mathematics, Physics, and one other science.
How Competitive Is Engineering Admission?
Engineering competitiveness varies significantly by institution and discipline. At UNILAG and UI, Petroleum and Electrical Engineering are extremely competitive (effective JAMB scores 230–260). Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the same schools require 210–240. At federal technology universities like FUTMINNA, FUTA, and ATBU, effective scores for engineering are lower — 180–210 — making them more accessible for candidates with mid-range JAMB scores. State universities are generally less competitive still.
Which Engineering Discipline Should You Choose?
This is a question about your long-term career, not just admission. Petroleum Engineering has the highest starting salaries in Nigeria but is highly location-dependent (Niger Delta) and cyclical with oil prices. Electrical/Electronics Engineering has the broadest applications — from power to telecoms to tech. Civil Engineering underpins infrastructure and construction, which Nigeria needs at scale. Mechanical Engineering feeds manufacturing, oil and gas, and energy. Computer Engineering overlaps with software development and is increasingly in demand. Choose based on your genuine interests and the industry trajectory — not just which one sounds most prestigious.
Top Engineering Schools in Nigeria
University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), and the federal universities of technology (FUTMINNA, FUTA, FUTO, ATBU) are the most consistently recommended for engineering. For Petroleum Engineering specifically, UNIPORT and FUTO have strong industry connections in the Niger Delta. Covenant University and Landmark University are notable private options for those open to private universities.
What If You’re Missing Physics or Chemistry?
Physics and Chemistry are the most commonly failed engineering prerequisites. If you don’t have credits in either, register for WAEC GCE (November/December) or NECO GCE (October/November) to resit. Under the two-sitting rule, you can combine results across sittings. Prioritize whichever subject you’re missing — don’t resit subjects you’ve already passed.
