Gombe Timber Market Destroyed by Fire, Governor Vows Investigation and Relief for Traders

Tragedy struck in Gombe State as a devastating fire outbreak razed a large section of the popular Gombe Timber Market, leaving traders counting heavy losses and reigniting concerns over fire safety in major commercial hubs. The incident, which occurred in the early hours, destroyed timber stocks, shops, and valuable equipment, disrupting livelihoods and sending shockwaves across the business community.

In swift response, the Gombe State Government has ordered a full investigation into the cause of the fire while pledging immediate and long-term support to affected traders.

A Market Engulfed in Flames

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as flames spread rapidly across the timber market, fueled by highly combustible materials stored within the premises. Despite efforts by traders and residents to contain the blaze, the fire overwhelmed the area before emergency responders could fully bring it under control.

Several shop owners reportedly lost goods worth millions of naira, accumulated over years of hard work. While no fatalities were officially reported, the emotional and economic toll on traders and their families remains significant.

Governor Reacts, Orders Immediate Investigation

Reacting to the incident, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep sympathy with victims of the fire and described the destruction as a painful setback for hardworking traders who form a vital part of the state’s economy.

The governor directed relevant state agencies to commence a thorough probe to determine the immediate and remote causes of the fire. According to him, understanding how the incident occurred is critical to preventing a recurrence, especially in markets where flammable materials are commonly stored.

He also emphasized the need for accountability where negligence is established, noting that safety standards in public markets must not be compromised.

Government Pledges Support for Affected Traders

Beyond the investigation, the state government assured victims that they would not be left to bear the burden alone. Governor Yahaya pledged government support and relief measures to help traders recover from their losses and return to business as quickly as possible.

State officials were directed to carry out an on-the-spot assessment to determine the scale of damage and identify immediate needs. This assessment is expected to guide interventions, including possible financial assistance, rebuilding efforts, and other forms of relief.

Renewed Concerns Over Market Safety

The Gombe timber market fire has once again brought to the forefront long-standing concerns about fire safety in Nigerian markets. Many markets across the country lack basic safety infrastructure such as fire extinguishers, access to water, clear exit routes, and emergency response systems.

Stakeholders argue that markets dealing in flammable goods, like timber and fuel-related products, require stricter regulations, regular safety inspections, and continuous awareness campaigns for traders.
