Niger Police Arrest Four Over Attack on Governor Umar Bago’s Convoy in Bida

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four suspects allegedly involved in the recent attack on the convoy of Governor Umar Bago in Bida Local Government Area.

The shocking incident, which occurred over the weekend, has sparked widespread concern across the state, especially as one of the arrested suspects is said to be a political figure affiliated with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

NNPP Chairmanship Candidate Among Arrested Suspects

According to police sources, one of the suspects, identified as Abdulmalik Nagemu, a Chairmanship candidate of the NNPP, has been directly linked to the attack. Nagemu’s alleged involvement has generated significant political tension in the area, with residents and party supporters demanding a thorough and transparent investigation.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday. He said the command acted swiftly following credible intelligence that connected the suspects to the attack.

Police Confirm Swift Investigation

SP Abiodun explained that the suspects were apprehended after the police launched a comprehensive operation to track down those responsible for the violence.

“The command has arrested four suspects in connection with the attack on the convoy of His Excellency, Governor Umar Bago, in Bida. Among those arrested is Abdulmalik Nagemu, a Chairmanship candidate under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). They are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing,” the statement read in part.

He also assured the public that the police would ensure justice is served without fear or favour, stressing that political affiliation or social status would not influence the investigation process.

Background of the Incident

Governor Umar Bago’s convoy reportedly came under attack last weekend while passing through the Bida Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses said that a group of unidentified men hurled stones and other dangerous objects at the governor’s vehicles, causing panic among his entourage.

While no casualties were recorded, several vehicles in the convoy sustained damage. The attack was widely condemned by residents, political groups, and civil society organizations, all of whom called for calm and urged the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Public Reactions and Political Implications

The arrest of a prominent NNPP candidate has added a political twist to the case, with many observers suggesting that the incident may have been politically motivated.

Supporters of the NNPP, however, have called for caution, urging security agencies not to politicize the investigation. Meanwhile, members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have described the arrest as a “welcome development” and a step toward maintaining law and order during the ongoing local government political campaigns.

Niger Police Vow to Maintain Peace and Security

SP Abiodun further reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring peace across the state, particularly as the local government elections draw closer.

“The police will not tolerate any act of violence or political thuggery. We have intensified patrols and surveillance across Bida and other parts of the state to prevent a recurrence of such incidents,” he said.

He also urged residents to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt action.
