What Is NECO GCE?
NECO GCE (General Certificate Examination) is the external, private-candidate version of the NECO SSCE. While the internal SSCE (June/July) is for registered SS3 students sitting through their school, GCE is open to anyone: school leavers, candidates who want to improve specific grades, students who didn’t sit the internal exam, or candidates combining NECO with WAEC credits. The examination runs in November/December each year and carries exactly the same weight for university admission as the internal SSCE.
When Does NECO GCE 2026 Registration Open?
NECO GCE registration for the 2026 series typically opens in September and closes in October. The official announcement comes through the NECO website at neco.gov.ng. Set a reminder to check the site in early September — the registration window is short, and missing it means waiting until 2027.
Who Should Register for NECO GCE 2026?
You should consider NECO GCE 2026 if: your NECO internal SSCE 2026 results aren’t going to give you the credits you need; you want to improve a grade in a specific subject; you missed the June/July sitting entirely; or you need NECO to combine with WAEC credits under the two-sitting rule. University admission for the 2027/2028 academic year will require your O’Level results, and GCE 2026 results (released early 2027) will be available in time for that cycle.
How to Register for NECO GCE 2026
NECO GCE registration is done through NECO-accredited CBT centres — you cannot complete it entirely on your own. Here’s how the process works:
Step 1: Find a NECO-accredited registration centre near you. These are typically schools, exam prep centres, or ICT centres with NECO registration accreditation. The NECO website lists accredited centres by state.
Step 2: Visit the centre with your documents: recent passport photographs, your birth certificate or age declaration, and any previous O’Level results if you have them.
Step 3: The centre operator registers your details on the NECO portal and assigns you a candidate number. Choose your subjects carefully at this stage — changes after payment are typically not allowed.
Step 4: Pay the registration fee. NECO GCE fees have historically been in the range of ₦15,000–₦20,000 for the standard subject combination, but fees are updated annually. Confirm the current amount at the centre or on the official NECO website.
Step 5: Collect your registration slip with your candidate number and centre details. This is your exam credential — keep it safe.
Choosing Your Subjects for NECO GCE
Choose subjects based on what you need for university admission, not what you think will be easy. If you’re targeting Medicine, you need credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics — all five at the C grade or above. Engineering needs English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Don’t register subjects you don’t need just to fill slots — each additional subject adds to the cost and the exam burden without helping your admission prospects.
If you’re using NECO GCE to fill gaps in your WAEC result (two-sitting rule), only register the specific subjects where you need credit improvements. This keeps the cost manageable and the preparation focused.
NECO GCE 2026 Exam Period
The November/December examination series typically runs from November through December. NECO publishes the official timetable on its website after the registration period closes. Exams are conducted at NECO-designated centres — your centre will be confirmed on your registration slip.
When Will NECO GCE 2026 Results Be Out?
NECO GCE results are typically released in January or February of the following year. For the November/December 2026 series, expect results around January–February 2027. These will be available in time for the 2027 UTME registration cycle and for university clearance for the 2027/2028 academic session.
NECO GCE vs WAEC GCE: Which Should You Write?
Both serve the same purpose and are equally accepted by JAMB and Nigerian universities. Practically speaking, WAEC GCE tends to have more registration centres across the country and a slightly more organised registration process in most states. NECO GCE is often more accessible in the North and in states where NECO has stronger infrastructure. If you have a choice, write whichever you can register for more easily and whose centres are more accessible to you. If you can afford it, writing both maximises your chances of getting the credits you need.
How NECO GCE Results Are Used for Admission
When your NECO GCE results come out, they can be combined with previous WAEC or NECO results under the two-sitting rule — giving you up to two chances across different bodies and sittings to accumulate the five credits you need. Present your NECO GCE result statement (the original, not a screenshot) during university clearance. JAMB’s CAPS system will also require you to upload O’Level results during the admission verification process.
