WAEC Subject Combination for Accounting 2026: O’Level Requirements

WAEC Subject Combination for Accounting 2026

Accounting is one of Nigeria’s most popular university programmes — and for good reason. It’s a professional pathway that leads to careers in audit, corporate finance, tax, banking, and public sector finance. Getting the right O’Level combination is the first step. Here’s what you need.

Required O’Level Subjects for Accounting

For admission into Accounting at Nigerian universities, you need five credit passes including: English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and one or two commercial subjects such as Accounting (Financial Accounting), Commerce, or Business Studies. The fifth subject can be from a range of options — Government, Geography, CRS, or another arts/social science subject — depending on the specific school.

The absolute non-negotiables are English Language, Mathematics, and Economics. Accounting (Financial Accounting at O’Level) is also very helpful and accepted at most schools. Mathematics and Economics are required at virtually every Nigerian university for Accounting admission.

O’Level Requirements by School

University of Lagos (UNILAG): English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting or Commerce, one other arts/social science.
University of Ibadan (UI): English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting or Commerce, one other.
OAU Ile-Ife: English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting or Commerce, one other social science or arts.
UNILORIN: English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting or Commerce, one other relevant subject.
ABU Zaria: English, Mathematics, Economics, Commerce or Accounting, one other.
UNIBEN: English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting or Commerce, one other arts or social science.
Most State Universities: English, Mathematics, Economics, and any two of: Accounting/Commerce/Government/Geography/CRS.
Private Universities (Covenant, AUN, Babcock, etc.): English, Mathematics, Economics, one commercial subject, one other.

JAMB Subject Combination for Accounting 2026

The standard JAMB combination for Accounting is: Use of English (compulsory), Mathematics, Economics, and one of the following — Commerce, Accounting (if offered as a JAMB subject), or Government. At many schools, Commerce is the preferred fourth subject alongside Mathematics and Economics. Some universities accept Government in place of Commerce — always verify with your specific target institution.

How Competitive Is Accounting Admission?

Accounting is popular and therefore moderately competitive. At UNILAG, the effective JAMB score for Accounting is typically 200–230. At OAU and UNILORIN, it’s around 190–220. State universities generally admit around 180–200. The good news is that accounting is offered at nearly every Nigerian university, so your options are broader than for medicine or law.

Accounting vs. Finance vs. Banking and Finance

These are closely related but distinct paths. Accounting is focused on recording, analyzing, and reporting financial information — it leads most directly to professional qualifications like ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria), ACCA, or CPA. Finance is broader — it covers investment, capital markets, financial modeling, and corporate strategy in addition to accounting principles. Banking and Finance combines elements of banking regulation, financial analysis, and economics with some accounting. If your goal is to become a chartered accountant or work in audit/tax, Accounting is the cleaner route. If you’re interested in investment banking, capital markets, or corporate treasury, Finance might serve you better.

Professional Certifications After Your Degree

An Accounting degree from a Nigerian university is typically the first step toward ICAN membership, which is the most recognized accounting qualification in Nigeria. Most employers in audit, banking, and public sector finance expect graduates to be working toward ICAN or ACCA while employed. The process takes three to five years post-graduation. Your degree exempts you from some ICAN foundation papers depending on your institution and your final grade. Starting your ICAN studies during your final year of university is advisable.

Top Accounting Schools in Nigeria

For Accounting, the consistently top-rated schools are University of Lagos (UNILAG), OAU Ile-Ife, University of Ibadan (UI), ABU Zaria, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK). Among private universities, Covenant University in Ota, Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola have strong Accounting departments. The quality of accounting education at a given university correlates with how many of their graduates go on to pass ICAN or ACCA exams at competitive rates — ask about this when making your choice.
